Severe stomch pain feels like a tumor?

I have a severe pain in my upper abdomen below my left rib cage. Now its getting tender and kind of dull. This has been happening for awhile now its getting worse. If I go to the docter will she send me to the hospital for test immeadiately or what? And if they did find something like a hernia would I have to get surgery right away because I have something planned for this weekend and I can't miss it. Please help!
